Starting PhonExt
The easiest way to start PhonExt is to add a link to your "today" screen
(1) or
even to assign a hardware button to the application.
It is also possible to add a shortcut to the application to the directory "Windows\Start up".
Then PhonExt will be automatically started each time you (re)start your XDA/MDA.
When you start PhonExt, it will appear as a little icon in the lower right
corner of your Pocket PC's "today" screen (2):

By tapping on the icon with your stylus, PhonExts menu will appear:

There are four menu options:
The menu options are discussed in the following paragraphs.
When you select Dial a contact from the PhonExt menu, a list of your contacts
appears.
(if you added a shortcut to the "today" screen or assigned a hardware button,
then the list will also appear when you click the shortcut or press the hardware button.)

You can scroll through the list by tapping on the arrows on the right. With the upper
button you go to the beginning of the list; press the lower arrow button to go
to the
end.
When you see the contact you want to call, you can select it by tapping it. Then click
on the Dial button.
When you do so, a screen appears with three types of phone numbers: Home, Mobile and
Business. If the person you want to call doesn't have all the types of phone
numbers,
only the types he or she has are active.

You can call a phone number by clicking one of the buttons.
When you select "Category ring tones" from the PhonExt menu, a screen appears
on which you can assign a ring tone to a category of contacts.

It is possible to add,
modify or
remove the assignment of a ringtone to a
category.
It is also possible to set the order in which
the categories of a contact are checked.
When you click Add on the Category screen, another screen appears on
which you can select one of the
categories of contacts.

Then you can select a ring tone by clicking the [...] button.
A screen appears, with all the available ring tones in the standard
directory "Windows\Rings\".

You can select a ring tone by typing the name and clicking OK, or by
tapping on a certain ring tone.
After selecting a tone you'll return to the previous screen and hear the
selected ring tone. You can leave this
screen by confirming your choices (OK) or by cancelling them (Cancel).
If you assigned a ring tone to a category earlier, it is possible to change
this assignment.
To do so, you select one of the categories on the you assigned a ring tone to,
and click on Modify.
Then a screen appears, similar to the Add screen.
To remove category ringtone, you select one of the categories you assigned a ring
tone to, and click on Remove.
In Outlook it is possible to assign more than one category to a contact. In
PhonExt you can assign ring tones to as many categories as you like. But when a
contact that belongs to multiple categories decides to call you, PhonExt has to
determine which ring tone it has to play.
So in PhonExt you can set the priority according to which the selection of ring tones should take place.
You can change the priority by selecting one of the categories you assigned a
ring tone to, and push the Move Up or Move Down button.
This determines the order in which PhonExt checks which tone to ring when you
are receiving a call.
The third option of Phonext is to assign a ring tone to a contact. In fact
this is an add-on to the Contacts application.
Start the "Contacts" application, select a contact and hold the stylus
pressed down for a moment. Then an extended menu appears:

Click the option Set ring tone, and a little screen appears.

You can select a ring tone by clicking on [...]. A second screen
appears, with all the available ring tones in the standard directory
"Windows\Rings\".

You can select a ring tone by typing the name and pushing "OK", or by tapping
on a certain ring tone.
After selecting a tone you'll return to the previous screen and hear the ring
tone. You can leave this
screen by confirming your choices (OK) or by cancelling them (Cancel).
When you assigned a ring tone to a contact earlier, the name of it is shown
in the little screen. You can change it by clicking on the [...] button or
remove it by clicking on [C].
When you are receiving a call, at first PhonExt will check if a personal
ring tone was assigned to the contact that calls you. If so, it will ring this tone.
Secondly PhonExt will check if a ring tone is assigned to one of the categories
the contact belongs to. It does so beginning with the first category in the
priorities list,
going on in downward order.
If no special ring tone is assigned to neither the contact nor to the categories the
contact belongs to, the standard tone will be ringed. You can change that in the settings
of the standard phone application.
By selecting the About option from PhonExts menu you can open up the
following screen:

This screen shows you the version of PhonExt.
By selecting the Exit option from PhonExts menu you can close the
application.
When you receive a call in all cases the standard tone will be ringed now.
It is still possible to assign a ring tone to a contact.
